Judges of election are responsible for the administration of election procedures in the polling place
on election day.  They are in the position of ensuring that the election process is administered fairly
and in accordance with our laws.

How to Become An Election Judge    

Stop by the Election Commission office and fill out an application, please be sure to bring a
photo ID as we will need a copy for your file.  We will, to the best of our ability, perform
background checks.  You may also mail your application, however when doing so please remember
to include a copy of your photo ID.

Once your application is received and has gone through background check you are placed on an
Alternate list.  Please keep in mind you must be available to go anywhere in our jurisdiction as
being an Election Judge you may be placed anywhere not necessarily your home district.
The list of Election Judges is sent to the Circuit Judge for approval every two years.

Duties:    

Some of the duties of the judges of election are:

  • to open and close the polls;
  • to be responsible for all election materials;
  • to ensure that only qualified voters are permitted to vote and that each qualified voter is permitted to
     vote once and only once;
  • to ensure that all votes are cast in secret;
  • to give instructions in the method of voting when requested by a voter;
  • to give assistance to illiterate and physically disabled voters;
  • to maintain order in the polling place throughout the day;
  • to tally the vote after the polls are closed;
  • to certify the election results in that precinct.

Training   

Training is an essential part your Election Judge experience.  While it is not required it does make
a difference in the pay you will receive for being an Election Judge.  The office will contact you closer
